</tbody></table>I recently had the opportunity to go ice skating. I've been ice skating twice before--in high school and in my mid-20's. Both times I had a good time but I was slow and clumsy and fell a lot.<br />
<br />
Now, at age 35, I weigh considerably more than I did either of those two times. But, I am in so much better shape.<br />
<br />
It took me a couple of laps to get the hang of it, and I wobbled a bit here and there, but I never fell down. As I was sailing around one lap, I realized this is why we should be eating right and exercising. Not to lose weight, not to just be healthier, but to be able to get out there and live our lives!<br />
<br />
Almost two years of Pilates has greatly increased my balance and all these spin classes are certainly strengthening my legs. So I was able to try something (semi-) new and be pretty good at it.<br />
<br />
I had so much fun...and isn't that what life should be about?<br />

I could blame it on the winter blues or work schedule that doesn't allow me to go to my favorite classes but the reality is that I've just been plain unmotivated. But that has changed.<br>
<br>
Over the weekend, I was sorting mass quantities of clothes (mostly too big now) and discovered a bathing suit that I had purchased for a vacation 5 years ago. And haven't worn since.<br>
<br>
My schedule is changing for the summer so I was able to hit my favorite Tuesday lineup at the YMCA--Pilates, Zumba, Aqua Zumba, and water aerobics.<br>
<br>
I packed two swimsuits, the one I had recently found and one that I knew was starting to get a little big on me. I tried on the old one first and IT FIT PERFECTLY.<br>

</div><div>A lot of people use various sorts of charts, graphs, and apps (oh my!) to accomplish their balance but I have discovered that I am very bad at maintaining a food/exercise diary and I can't can't afford the techno-monitor options. </div><div><br>
</div><div>I also have a tendency to not eat for hours and hours and then stuff myself because I'm starving. Not healthy.</div><div><br>
</div><div>So I made a food-tracking program that works for me.</div><div><br>
First of all, I am not a doctor, nutritionist, or dietitian. I just know what works for me and thought there may be others that can relate. I don't have any dietary concerns except for a dairy allergy so I'm able to focus on just counting calories. This may be more difficult if you are watching your sodium or cholesterol intake. </div><div><br>
</div><div>I also don't keep track of balancing meat/starch/veggies/etc but I tend to eat healthier over all when I'm following this plan.</div><div></div><a href="http://angdrw.blogspot.com/2011/03/calories-in-calories-out.html#more">Read more »</a>anghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15747785308285655723noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9203741728200173926.post-75453892052213038472011-02-26T19:59:00.000-08:002011-02-26T22:07:51.260-08:00Why I Got 'Inked'Throughout my life, I have never been an athletic or even a very active person. Until I was in my mid-twenties, I was naturally thin and never really thought much about it. When I began gaining weight, I still didn't really think much about it. In about 10 years time my weight almost doubled. Other than a short time in which a friend literally dragged me to the gym every day and stood over me while I worked out I never did anything about it. I didn't like the weight and knew it was un-healthy but I didn't have the self-discipline to stick with eating healthy or exercising, so I resolved myself to being about a 180 pound size 16...which is a lot on someone who is only 5' tall.<br>
<br>
Then I discovered Zumba. I don't want to sound like those crazy infomercials but this really has changed my life. <br>

<br>
There are a lot of great movie kisses and there are a lot of lists that tell you which ones are the good ones. And this one probably doesn't rate on anyone else's list...but it's my favorite.<br>
<br>
It's from the movie, Penelope.<br>

The next thing I do is read my favorite webcomics. Two of them are daily, one is Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and the other is Tuesday, Thursday so I have three new comics to read every day.<br>

Someone Else: who's watching I used to be fat??<br>
Me: Every single day. In the mirror. ;)<br>

Me: Start with the spinoff, I used to be fatter. ;)<br>

I really wasn't and I'm pretty sure he knew it. But it got me thinking about what 'fat' means, anyway. It really is more of a state of mind than a physical state of being.<br>

Other than a couple of Zumba parties and a few random workouts, I haven't worked out since school started the end of August. The bad news? I haven't lost anymore weight these three months. The good news? I didn't gain any. By just adjusting my food intake, I was able to maintain my 148 lbs for three months. I sat in the chair staring off into space (and possibly drooling) for an indeterminate time. My brain absolutely would not function. This is when I realized that there's a reason everyone who has done polyphasic sleeping recommends starting it when you have minimal requirements on your time. I couldn't remember my name much less how to multiply trinomials.<div><br /></div><div>So I went to bed and slept for about 5 hours. </div><div><br /></div><div>I have decided to back off to a less drastic schedule of a 4.5 hour core and 2 20-minute naps. When I am off work for Christmas break I will probably transition back but it's not going to work right now.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you are considering trying a polyphasic sleep schedule I highly recommend reading as much as you can find on the subject and listening to how others have made it work, or not. I'm a little hard-headed sometimes though.</div>anghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15747785308285655723noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9203741728200173926.post-40175558569136345792010-10-20T08:48:00.000-07:002010-10-20T08:59:15.542-07:00Day 1 continued...This morning I had time to read facebook, twitter, the usual webcomics and blogs, blog a little myself, watch 3 episodes of Battlestar Galactica, talk to a few other-time-zone friends, take a nice long shower and still get to work early and not-rushed. I am loving the extra time!<br /><br />My 7:30 nap didn't go great but it was ok. I'm sure I'll get better at passing out quickly as my body adjusts.<br /><br />I am going to adjust my schedule though so it works for me now and will still work when my schedule changes for Spring semester. I'm going to switch to a 1.5 core at 2am + 4 naps at 7:30, 12:30, 5, and 9:30.<br /><br />I also need to get my food intake back on track so I'm going to plan a meal after each sleep period except for the 5pm...I'll need to eat around 4 so that I can get back to the Y for the 5:30 classes.<br /><br />As always, I'm a work-in-progress.anghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15747785308285655723noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9203741728200173926.post-20025397888704437422010-10-20T01:26:00.000-07:002010-10-20T08:47:47.123-07:00Day 1Polyphasic sleep schedule update at 4:30am. I just slept for 3 hours and I'm not as tired as I thought I would be. My plan is to drive to work early and take my 7:30am nap in my car...I'm sure I'll have no trouble sleeping then. <div><br /></div><div>So far this morning my thoughts are a bit dis-jointed.</div><div><br /></div><div>I think I'm going to count midnight-1am as still the night before and my next day starts when I wake up at 4am.<br /><div><br /></div><div>I now have 2+ extra hours in the morning before work....will I use them to be responsible and productive or to watch sci-fi? </div><div><br /></div><div>It's too bad there isn't a 24-hour gym near here, I'd love to go work out right now. </div><div><br /></div><div>One reason I wanted to try this is that I have friends in time zones all over the world that I rarely get to talk to and I've already had conversations with two of them because I'm awake at an unusual hour...so that part is a success.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><em></em></div><div><em></em></div><div> </div></div>anghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15747785308285655723noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9203741728200173926.post-83275147883280327902010-10-19T11:54:00.000-07:002010-10-20T03:50:51.731-07:00polyphasic sleepingI heard about polyphasic sleeping (<a href="http://girlsaregeeks.wordpress.com/2010/10/18/how-to-sleep-hack/">sleep hacking</a>) this week and the more I read about it the more I want to give it a try. <div><br /></div><div>I'm not going to get into a detailed description of polyphasic sleeping because there are tons of blogs already out there that describe it (try google-ing it)...I'm just going to chronicle my experience. </div><div><br /></div><div>I am beginning today with an 'Everyman' schedule of core sleep from 1-4am and 20-minute naps at 7:30, 2:30, and 9:30.</div><div><br /></div><div>I begin work at 8am so I am going to get to campus at 7:30am, sleep in my car for 20, then walk in to begin work. I also have a feeling I'll be making daily trips to Wal-Mart at around 5am. </div><div><br /></div><div>Why am I doing this? I have many reasons not the least of which is I want to be able to get all my work done and still watch 6+ hours of Doctor Who. </div><div><br /></div><div>So let the experiment begin!</div>anghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15747785308285655723noreply@blogger.com0
